The importance of Stars?

By: Shelly Constantz

With all the talk about getting one star or 5 stars, I wanted to point out a much more telling point.  If you hover your pointer over the stars (or lack of stars) you will see how many folks actually rated the post.

It is interesting that a blog my have 50 views, and five stars.. When you hover over it, only one person actually rated the blog (and they thought it was excellent and gave the post 5 stars), thus the 5 star rating.  You can see a blog that has 15 views, and 1 star, hover over the star(s) and you will see that 4 people rated it, all with one star.

Just a more telling view, in my very humble opinion, of what may actually be a good or a poor blog.  Try it yourself, just because someone got 5 stars doesn't necessarily mean it is a 5 star blog, only that one person thought it was.

In that same vien,  a blog can have 3 or 4 stars, and when you hover, you find out that many folks have rated it. Some may have rated it a 5 and some a 1, thus a 3 averaged out....

My advice, don't get too hung up on stars.  And get all the information, not just a little bit.

Shelly

The One Star Bandit Revealed:

He is I, or I am him, or me it be or..... oh, forget it!

Yes, I may be the notorious masked bandit for all I know, for I have been guilty of giving some posts ONE star.  I've also given some posts 2 stars and other 3, 4 and, yes, even FIVE BIG ONES!

Okay, so I jest a bit... I have no idea who it is that some call the One Star Bandit and I wonder if it is one particular individual.  I do know that on one occassion I gave a post only one star and was accused of being the 'bandit' but on most other occassions the supposed 'bandit' was someone else... so, who knows?

I wasn't even aware of the stars until a few months ago when someone brought up this topic.  Somehow their very existence had eluded me.  This wouldn't surprise my Susie, however, as I am the typical male who doesn't notice much of anything unless it has to do with sports or short skirts and high heels.  (Yes, I know... I'm a dog - maybe even a putz.)  Speaking of stars, did any of you watch that reality show that is kind of like American Idol... the one where the Clothes Changing magician won last year?  The guy that won this year is a fabulous ventriloquist.  I liked the reggae singer, Cas, best though.  But that ventriloquist is awesome.  The teenage girl was really good too... hell, they were all good.  I don't usually watch those type of shows but that one caught my attention and I got hooked.

Oops, sorry, I got off topic (AADD strikes again).  Back to 'Rating STARS'.  Is it really possible for the star system to have any meaning or relevance at all in th absence of a 'key'?  I mean, without some sort of set standard, don't the number of stars mean different things to different people?  Perhaps if the stars have significant meaning to an individual posting, he/she should provide a 'key' or 'scale' at the end of the post for readers to use.  Something like:

Key for rating this post:

One Star = Why, oh why, did I waste 3 minutes of my life reading this tripe.  You owe me big time and you ARE going to pay somehow, somewhere, sometime.

Two Stars = Is this guy kidding me... he thought someone would actually read this and benefit from it... please.  Oh well, at least I'm a speed-reader so I only lost 4 seconds of my life.

Three Stars = Ho hum... whatever!

Four Stars = This post has no real value to me but it did make me hungry enough to get off my buttocks and make a sandwich so I guess it has some nutritional value.

Five Stars = YOU DA MAN!  My life has been transformed and I am forever in your debt.  I'd like to reward you monetarily for this great knowledge you've bestowed upon me.  I'll be putting a check in the mail tomorrow!

No Stars = I'm dyslexic so it is probably best that I refrain from making a choice.

Hey, in my opinion, we're all stars in our own right! Pat yourself on the butt and say, 'Good job... you ARE the man/woman!'

Uh, I'm shocked! I'm not sure...but I "THINK" Mr. Rotondo actually said something "POSITIVE". Or am I just being too optomistic?

I think I should give this thread five stars just because it made me think that Phil actually made a positive remark in someone elses thread!

Yes, it would be nice if everyone used the same criteria for "starring" purposes. Your suggested system was amusing, yet effective, Tim.

In my opinion, the One Star Bandit is not one who gives one star to a particularly trite post, but one who awards one star to a previously higher ranked and good quality post.

Good post, Shelly.

As the Mary Chaping Carpenter  song "I Feel Lucky"  says, "The stars might lie, but the numbers never do."

I don't really pay any attention to the stars ... whether on my posts or others'. I do appreciate when I get good rating but I don't take it too seriously.  When it comes to me rating others ... I have a simple method ... if I really really like the post and feel like giving out stars (which is only very rarely) I give it 4 or 5 ... if I don't like it much or it doesn't interest me, I don't usually rate at all. If I see a post that has 5 stars and in my opinion doesn't deserve them, that's when I go and downrate it. ... overall, I probably rate only some 2% of posts I read.

Most of the time if I like a post, I post to it.  If I don't, I don't.  Most of the time I forget to rate it.  And there are probably quit a few of us just like me.  I checked out the mouse over and if there are 20 posts on a thread and only 1 person rated it... well you see what I mean.  Don't get hung up on the stars.
