Radio - An Effective Tool?

First: This is my first attempt to start a thread on RELIB. I love this forum, as well as the message board on P2, but I have sometimes ruffled feathers there, and a once or twice here (I think they call my condition "type A"). I can't tell you how much I value everyone's input in all of these matters, it has proven invaluable.

I am a subscriber to the idea that if someone is spending big money running ads over and over, consistently for a long period of time, it almost has to be paying off for them, or they would stop.  So, here is the question.  In my neck of the woods, agents pop up putting together radio advertising for a week or two and then… they are gone. However, there are a couple of agents that seem to always have ads on the am talk radio stations that I frequent while driving. One says she sells “27 times more homes than the average Salt Lake City agent” and “just like Donald Trump, you can fire me anytime”.  Another agent seems to be there all the time, knocking some local agents that have been offering a free TV with each transaction: “…if you want a TV, go to Wal…” “if you want a dedicated Realtor® to… call me!”

Do any of you make the commitment to spend this kind of money for similar ads?  Or do you have colleagues that do, that can report cost vs. return.  There can be no doubt that the ad campaign’s effectiveness will depend on the quality and relevance of the ad, but given that, what are your comments?

Troy, there is a guy in Boise who runs radio ads on KBOI pretty consistantly.  He also has riders on his signs that send you to a radio channel to hear his "talking homes" when you drive buy.

I personally listen to XM satellite radio because they don't have any commercials.

I was curious if anyone has used the new radio ad feature in Google yet? If so, what the response has been.

Troy, I use radio year round. LOW frequency but every week. I spend about $600 a month and that includes about $200 sponsoring the "streaming radio" player for 3 stations. That is a GREAT source of traffic for my site and a "computer savvy" client.

I have lots of past customers, and freinds who say the hear me on the radio "all the time", but it is not "true".  I alos reccomend YOU to be the voice talent so your ad stands out from the "static".

As always, IMHO!

John,

Thanks for the input, thats what I was hoping for, someone actually making the investment.

Splain "streaming radio". I R confused!? Guess you can tell that flew about 10 feet over my head.  Are you talking about radio on the station's website.  I listen there, at the office occasionally (mostly college sports) and I notice that the ads are different on that than the regular stations.  Is that it? Oh, and there is a blurb you have to listen to before it actually connects to the station, when you listen online.

I have done some checking in my area and for fairly good time slots it is only about $15 for a 15 second spot $30 for 30 and so on.  I realize that could add up quick.

Tell me more! Anyone!

Streaming is internet radio. Sometimes a 'terrestrial' station simulcasts on the internet. That is a 'stream'.

Radio spots on talk format stations can be a great marketing tool. See if you can coop with a local business  (mortgage company etc).

Also, see if you can be a guest on your local talk station. You'd be amazed - to talk hosts, a good guest is golden! :)
