I client put me in tears yesterday

By: Todd Clark

Let me first tell you that I am not one that cries. I did on the day my kids were born and that was about the end of the times I can remember crying. But, let me tell you yesterday a client of mine made me tear up.

The situation was she was behind on her payments on her home after losing her job and needed help. She had her electric, water & gas had all shut off. One of her friends said, “you need to call my friend Todd and he can help you.”

I did some investigation and found out she had over $200,000 in equity in her home. I told her that if she took that equity and bought a duplex she could pay cash and get $700 a month and not have to worry about a job until she found the one that worked for her. I helped her sell it and buy a duplex that will do exactly that. Well, she showed up at the office and her and my principle broker came into my office 4 days after the sale of her property and I’m thinking to myself, “What is wrong, I just talked to her yesterday and she was doing great.”

Just a little background for you that haven’t read some of my other blogs, I was a DJ for 18 years and have a large music collection of over 12,000 albums and loads of other music memorabilia.

This is where I became speechless and a tear came to my eye. As a ex-DJ, getting me to become speechless is pretty hard. She came up to me and gave me a hug and said “Todd, I want to thank you for letting me sleep for the first time in months, and I was having a sale and wanted to give you a thank you gift to show you how much I appreciate what you did for me and how much I truly believe that you were there to help me” This is when she gave me a 1915 Victor-Victrola IX with the optional stand. As a collector of music and music memorabilia, it was just an amazing gift that I will never forget and will always be in my living room to remind me why I do what I do.

Doesn't all the problems seem small when we look through those clients eyes?  Sometimes they have amazing stories.  When you help someone get into their home when they thought they couldn't....or are losing their home......amazing!  That is what makes this all worth it.

Todd, this is a service industry and fortunately for you, your client realized that you were working for her to get her back right with the world. Bless her heart, not being able to sleep with the weight of her dilema on her shoulders.

If you keep this up we are going to have to order you some shining armour. Not sure where to get that these days but I am sure we could find some. It might be a little cumbersome at first, but I think you could wear it well.

I suppose you are going to want a shield and sword too?

Shelly,

I think I will order the shield and sword too and see if I can talk him into slaying some dragons for me. I mean, once he has the outfit, he has to do the part. You just can't get all dressed up in shining armour and stand there and rust.

Candice,

How come it doesn't surprise me you have a Victrola? - lol

It is weird how most people collect the new and greatest sound equipment and gadgets and then people like you and me who were in the business go the other way.

Thank you once again everyone and yes this is a service industry and yes, 99% of us do this business to help others. It is that 1% that the news focuses on that give us the bad name unfortunately.

I know most of you here who comment on Relib are the good ones and I applaud you also. I do what I do, because the people I look up to are my family and you and I don't want to disappoint you!

SO THANK YOU!

Todd

Excellent work Todd. You changed her life significantly for the better.  Thanks for being in the business.  The present, no matter what it was, I am sure she feels was still not enough.  As a single mom in similar circumstances before real estate I thank you. Sometimes you need a little help to see the good and then everything can change.

Thanks for helping her.

Todd- That's great. I can feel the joy you had then. I was and still in telephone communication business just to help my community from India, people who have language barrier. Whenever I helped them I felt so good especially the elderly peoples. As you know lot of telephone carriers try to charge higher. Due to language barrier, these people were keep paying the higher rate and never questioned them. I decided to help them and did. People still call me and I always happy to help them.
